Party Performance (1 of 2)

People constantly ask if my novel is autobiographical. My response is that anything we create is inevitably autobiographical in some sense. In this case, in developing Pablo (the protagonist), I did in fact draw upon my experiences as a singer when I was younger.

So, when my sister decided to throw me a book-launch party, I decided to surprise my guests by singing two songs in Spanish. This was the first, "Piensa en Mi" ("Think of Me") by Luz Casal, from the Almodóvar movie Tacones Lejanos (High Heels).

As I took to the stage, the microphone batteries died (they were fine an hour before during the sound check) and the light bulb in the spotlight went out. We replaced the batteries and started the song over, which is why I mention the audience having to wait. However, we didn't have a replacement bulb, which is why the lighting is so bad. All the same, the show must go on (and it did)!
